Thursday Nov 28

Today was a "Let's work together to make sure we are moving together" day.

I had students working on their "About" piece of writing and their CA in the same room.

We also had students working on things they owed from other units and making sure their assignments were in for this unit too.

I posted the due dates for the AAM unit on the right-hand side of this blog, too.

Wednesday Nov 27

Today we did a fair number of things in class.

First, we took up the homework from yesterday that I got a few copies completed on paper, even though the instructions said by email.

So I asked people to email their responses to me by the end of the day.

At that point, we discussed what was needed to be done for Task 3 and Task 4 for the All About Me Unit. I allowed students at this point in time to use class time to work on things they needed to get done.

I also conducted a few Culminating Activity conferences that were not done last week. Only one interviewee confirmed with me that they did not have a conference with me and had to get one done today. We need to work on that as a group.

In those discussions, I mentioned the above video as an example that they could use to get a level one on the Presentation part of their CA Presentation.

Thanks Stephanie!

Here are the questions

Paying for Post-Secondary

1.     This is quite a lengthy Power Point on how to pay for school after secondary school. One of the points of the Careers course you took in Grade Ten was to have a five year plan. How would you describe what you are doing (or what you think you may be doing) in 2024 in fifty words or less.
2.     That’s great … having a plan is awesome. How might you be paying for this?
3.     Do you know your way around a College or University Calendar? Why might that be a skill that you should pick up?
4.     How might you also work to help out the other parts of a “Wellness Triangle” – a combination of your physical, mental/emotional and social wellbeing?

Monday Nov 25

We are moving forward with the All About Me Unit today.

We are reading an article "Three tips to ensure your online presence is helping your job search"

Here are the questions

1.     “Personal Brand”? What’s a definition of that?
2.     Is that important in 2019? Seriously? Can’t I just get hired by my network of people?
3.     How complete is your Final Product for this Unit, anyway?
4.     How well might your other social media support your job finding attempts?

5.     If a person looking to hire you actually googled you, what would they find?

I'm also working on the About write up for students too.

Wed and Thursday Nov 21

Both days we were in the library ... and both days we were doing the first set of conferences specifically for the culminating activity for the couse.

Yes, there were two big events going on at the school - Dodgeball and the football game in Hamilton respectively.

However, not everyone bought out and or signed out for the period. Disappointing.

We will have to work together to keep moving forward towards the finishing line in this course.

ok, see you Monday!

Tuesday Nov 19

We focussed on getting the About section of the Online Portfolio Task done today.

Focus.

I also conferenced with students about Task 1 - Articles ... we now have had four articles assigned.

Monday, November 18, 2019

Monday Nov 18

So ... today we are working on a few things:

First, we need to either share witht he teacher or show the teacher notes on the "About" section for your online portfolio.

Secondly, read this article and submit your answers to the questions tomorrow

Reasons to have LinkedIn

1. Before reading the article, did you know what LinkedIn was?
2. What are some reasons that you think you should have LinkedIn?
3 In a paragraph length piece of writing, answer the question “Are you ready to network like this, do you think?”
4 What exactly does “Networking” mean to you?
5 Why might the school system want you to volunteer, do you think?

Thirdly, get ready for the Culminating Activity interview we are having on Wednesday or Thursday in this class.

Friday Nov 14

So today was a catch up day.

We took a peek to see if everyone had the three articles from Nov 6, Nov 8 and Nov 13 handed in.

The we all took a peek at the "About" section of the teacher's LinkedIn account. It was during period one that I edited my own "blurb" for this. I was able to do it while my account was "live", which I do not recommend for my students. I asked them to email me draft versions of their "About" such that I could edit them.

One student did and we co-edited it together in front of the class. I also mentioned to students that they should be "humble-bragging" about themselves in this section, letting potential employers know who they are and what they can do.

I also asked that students mention if they had First Aid or a Food Handling certification in this section, too. If you don't have them, I posted spots to get them on the right-hand side of this blog.

After that, we chatted about the Task Three for the AAM unit - a Written Portfolio.

Have a great weekend.

Thursday Nov 14

So ... we took up the article questions from yesterday and ... I was interested in seeing how my students were handing things in. Pencil on paper ... how quaint ... next unit we'll be using chalk and blackboards, I guess .... ;)

As long as the assignments are rolling in, I'm good.

We also chatted a bit about the various platforms for the Task Two Online Portfolio for the All About Me (AAM) Unit.

Here is that discussion. I mean ... we had a powerpoint that launched some discussion and I also had a recommendation for this assignment: LinkedIn.

After that, I had to nag people for assignments and I had a chance to handback some material too.

Wed Nov 13

Today we are going to work on formal and informal Networking and start about why this works for businesses.

Also ... what is the difference between a reference and someone in your network.

Here is the article

and here are the questions due tomorrow.

1.     Draw a visual representation of your network – basically … who do you know
                                               i.     See the example that the teacher has up on the board
2.     How does one “reach out to one’s network” exactly?
3.     What are personal references? Do you have three you can use for a job application?
4.     Why do you have to “Maintain your network”? What exactly does that mean?
5.     Any of the Job Search Networking Tips at the end of the article appeal to you?

Tuesday, November 12, 2019

Tuesday Nov 12

So today we are looking at our networks. I did show my network to the students, but really, I shouldn't put it up here.

We also need to get the other two articles complete and into the teacher. The one from Friday and Wednesday.

Monday Nov 11

Ok ... so the busses are cancelled.

So that means you need to work on LinkedIn account for the "All About Me" unit.

So ... do that.

Friday Nov 8

So read this article and answer these questions.

Email your answers to me at Chesserhandin1 at gmail.com

1.     What percentage of employers that CareerBuilder surveyed used social media to screen candidates for hiring?
2.     In an informal piece of writing of about a paragraph, tell me what you think about this line:
“I think it should be very clear to anyone old enough to be looking for a full-time job to understand that, given all the social media scandals, you should assume employers—or anyone else that might have a say in your livelihood—will see what you post.”

3.     There are five really annoying online habits listed in the “Using Facebook to hire and fire” – of the five, which ones do you see as the one that would prevent someone from getting a full-time job after high school?
4.     What if you were working at a restaurant as a server and you disagreed with someone much higher up in the same company? Do you have the right to voice your disagreement with them without consequence?

5.     If you do disagree with your employer or customer in public, is there anything to protect you from getting fired?
